You will do best with line-of-sight to the giant towers atop Queen Anne Hill, from which NBC DTV broadcasts emanate. Fox (~~Q13~~KJZO) and PBS (KCTS) both use the towers near Madison and 17th, hence your relatively better other-the-air reception.

Another possibility is that you are using an amplified digital antenna (i.e. you plug it into a power outlet). If you're in Madison Valley you may be so close to the source antennas that your amplified home antenna exacerbates multipath distortion and ghosting.

I'm slightly closer to those QA antennas than you and have had surprisingly good results from a cheap and flimsy-looking antenna like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Artec-AN2-Digital-Flat-Antenna/dp/B0077J5ME6
