What you will want to research is if your router supports QoS (quality of service). If it does not natively, you can look into whether your device supports flashing OpenWRT, Tomato or DD-WRT which should have it.

If it does not support either of the above, you can get routers as cheap as $60 that come preinstalled with DD-WRT (which does support QoS): http://smile.amazon.com/BUFFALO-AirStation-HighPower-Wireless-WZR-300HP/dp/B0096239FG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1394919567&sr=8-4&keywords=buffalo

I am running into a similar issue. Getting ~200 up/down, have a gigabit router, have cat5e/cat6 running from wall to router, and from router to desktops. Very odd. I have this router, and it shows as a gigabit connection on both desktops.

I have a Buffalo WZR-300HP which is connected to the cable modem at one side of the top floor of the house, and then some no-name $15 router at the other end of the house, connected by ethernet cable. Also I had to upgrade the cable modem last year to get the higher speed downloads.

No special setup to join the LANs, devices connected to one don't see the other. I don't do that enough to bother figuring out how to make it work.

I have one TV connected via ethernet, but everything else runs on the Wifi. I think there about 6 Rokus, 3 consoles, and a couple of smart TVs that run Netflix (lots of people in the house, all with their own gear).

Once in a while the cheap router will flake out and the netflix streams go to shit until I reset it, but otherwise everything works great, the gamers report good network conditions (the game PCs are on ethernet though).
