or you could buy this...

There are plenty of great OSS programs, and plenty of shitty ones. Its no different than anything else

May require special firmware on the router.

Edit: Most DD-WRT users have to install it themselves onto their router. Here's an affordable router with DD-WRT already baked in.

Reading into installing DD-WRT on a router, I'm a little intimidated. And from what I've seen I believe my current router isn't compatible anyway. So, since I need a new router, any reason not to get one with DD-WRT already installed? I'm looking at this Buffalo AirStation N300 and it looks like it might work great for this purpose.

Any red flags to going that route?

Yeah, Belkin has been problematic for a long time, and Linksys's wired stuff too (in my experience). Them and D-Link are the main brands I completely avoid for most client networking stuff. Linksys was OK for wireless routers, but we've since switch to the Buffalo AirStation N300 DD-WRT routers and not a single problem. They are great little devices.

(edit, because otherwise someone will crawl down my throat about it: the above applies specifically to the home market. Business market is a different bundle of cables.)

For 50 bux you're not really going to get a "good" router by todays standards, but heres a decent one to start, comes preloaded with DDWRT too thats probably the best you are going to get for that price.

It has QoS and port control so at least your gaming experience should be good
