No to add to the paranoia, but if you're actually concerned you can put these under your bed posts (or you can make DIY ones). That way you can spot them if, heaven forbid, they find their way in.

It sounds like you'll get results back pretty soon, but buying these gave me huge peace of mind after my MIL got bedbugs and I started seeing them everywhere. It is spring time though, all kinds of weird bugs are showing up where I live at least. Good luck!

Do you have any pics of the bug? I am good at ID'ing. There are a few possible other insects that look similar.

Of course if you have the mosquito bite like marks that itch a lot then there's really no question.

You're in a rough situation but it could be worse at least since you haven't invested in a ton of furniture.

High heat dry all the clothes, you can probably do your shoes actually if you put them in a garment bag.

There's a variety of surfaces bed bugs can't climb. That's why there are products like 'climbups' https://www.amazon.com/Climbup-Interceptor-Bed-Bug-Trap/dp/B0033SC0LI

You can actually often replicate this effect using smooth clear tape, for example I have used Gorilla Repair tape https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-22087/Duct-Tape/Gorilla-Repair-Tape-2-x-27-Clear?pricode=WB5997&gadtype=pla&id=S-22087&gclid=Cj0KCQiAtbnjBRDBARIsAO3zDl8I81O9XKuQVShOKaJp0-3r7CxL_l7ZXWX9v2T_V4RcQeX3uEhppa0aAm86EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

If you google you'll find other documentation / video demonstrating this.

So one solution is you get a large container or tub for your possibly infected items like laptop and headphones, and you put them in the container or tub, and wrap the inside with a non-climbable material like the tape.

Do you see what I'm saying? In effect you're making a barrier to either keep them in the container if they are already in there or keep them out if they are not in there but are in the rest of the room.

This will at least let you contain your questionable items and buy some time with storing them while you evaluate your options.

So perhaps but one of these:
https://www.target.com/p/sterilite-174-ultra-clear-storage-bin-clear-with-gray-lid-17-5gal/-/A-14757118

Wrap the inside and outside with repair tape so they can't climb, and you can figure things out.

When this happened to me at an airbnb, I actually just threw what I could in the dryer at a laundromat, carefully visually inspected all of my suitcases and bags and electronics, and rolled the dice and just kept my stuff. And I ended up being OK.

If you want to take it a step further, you could get a steamer and use it to steam clean your goods like suitcases:
https://www.bedbugs.umn.edu/bed-bug-control-in-residences/steamers

But that doesn't seem to solve the laptop situation.

You could just clean everything but the laptop and hope for the best. In all honesty it is not the most likely harborage for them.

Last final option that is the most expensive but most effective. Bedbug Fumigation:

I have some concerns about all THREE of those things going on at once, but if they live in an apartment or condo, the battle could be greater than them. Lice are easy enough to treat, cockroaches are obnoxious but can also be dealt with despite jokes about surviving nuclear events, but bedbugs are resistant to some pest control treatment and an expensive nightmare for everyone who has to deal with them.

Do you believe that dad and GF are clean people who keep a clean house (this does not prevent any of the 3 pests from moving in depending on the situation, time of year, etc.) or is cleanliness in their own space a possible issue? If you think it might be an issue, expect that the cleanup process is going to take longer. Likewise if they share any wall space with other units, as cockroaches and bedbugs use electrical outlets, etc. as freeways. Bedbugs sometimes arrive in boxes, like the packages you might have shipped from Amazon, and other innocuous things. Head lice can spread in an office in the same way they are spread in school, but since they don't jump or fly, if dad and GF stay lice-free your daughter should too.

Yes, fumigation, etc. all the recommended treatments probably needs to be done. If they share wall space, and a bigger building is infected, then coordination and carryout of every recommendation necessary (and the list for bedbugs is crazy long, it tests most people's patience) may be imperfect leading to imperfect results. I think that the cost of dealing with bedbugs in your own home AND the risk of her bringing bedbugs to school is great and you have to address it. I don't think that your daughter not staying over at their place while it's dealt with is overreacting, so long as dad isn't cut out, particularly because dealing with bedbugs can be a multiple-month process and neither dad nor your daughter should be punished. Limiting her exposure to clothes on her back for a day visit, a neutral location visit like a park, a family member's house, etc. would be a good step. Washing clothes in HOT water as soon as she gets home another productive step. And then I'd look into ways you can help protect your house should one piggyback over, effective prevention includes: bedbug proof zippered mattress and box spring cases (bonus, these help with allergens too!), inspecting bedframes and sheets for signs of bugs or bites, [detectors under bed legs] (http://smile.amazon.com/Climbup-Insect-Interceptor-Bed-Trap/dp/B0033SC0LI/ref=smi_www_rcolv2_go_smi?_encoding=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0), vacuum regularly and immediately remove vacuumed contents from house, what you were already doing for lice w/ regards to bedding, and block access from electrical outlets, etc. by sealing holes around plates and covering unused plugs with well-fitting childproofing stuff or tape. Some of those steps are preventative, some just help contain the problem to keep that more manageable should you get them, or eep, already have them. Godspeed!

That's what the step up traps are for:

https://www.amazon.com/Climbup-Interceptor-Bed-Bug-Trap/dp/B0033SC0LI/

I put diatomaceous earth in the center circle, talcum powder in the outer ring. They can climb into the outer ring, but can't climb back out. Worked magic for us.

I think the Vaseline / double sided tape is a great idea! I didn't think of it when we had our problem.

Oh, yeah -- this is crucial. The bed cannot touch the wall. Absolutely. Thanks for mentioning that.

u/CrookedStool · 3 pointsr/Bedbugs

Wasn't the point. You can clean a air mattress much easier then a regular mattress and box spring. Bugs cant get into them either. Get air mattress that comes with a collapsible metal frame that replaces a traditional box spring, put some ClimbUps or two sided tape on the feet/legs and the bugs will have a hard time getting to you and they wont be living in your bed.

> plastic is the one thing they cannot cross.

Is that why the Climb-Up product works? They're fairly reliable, right?

u/TwaddlePop · 2 pointsr/sydney

Another less well known method of removing these bugs is with whats known as a 'Climb up insect interceptor'. Only seen these overseas though.

Basically a plastic tray that sits under your furniture legs that is smooth on the inside so it captures bugs either trying to go up onto your furniture or trying to go down and leave it.

Good for working out where they are living and breeding if there is an infestation.

Yes we went to the laundromat and then also purchased the steamer for things that couldn't be laundered. Besides that, the 3 best things are bed post interceptors, a good mattress encasement and CimeXa desiccant

Get the climb up intercepter traps for your bed where it touches the floor and remove any bedskirt or low hanging bedding and sleep on the bed as normal. Then check the traps daily to see if you catch any bugs.

>From what I understand a female lays from 1 to 5 eggs a day. How long do these take to hatch? I've read about 6 days but also up to 120. Which one is or? How long can the newborn bedbugs last without a blood meal?

Does it matter? Conditions vary on environmental factors. Your being bit you have to take immediate action to get them all and keep pounding until they are gone. The longer you wait the more they breed more.

>I did a very long travel recently and have been getting very small red spots in line, a few blood stains in the bottom sheet and I seem to have found a skin from the change they undergo and maybe even a dead one (not sure) under the bed.

Your infested already and the traps/jelly under the bed is not assisting as they are already on your bed.

You need to take these steps right away before your problem multiplies out of your control.

>>I plan on setting traps to verify.

Your already infected by what your saying.

These trap can help, but not by themselves without taking the steps in my link above. They prefer to remain close or even on a host, so there is little need to travel and get caught in the post trap. Plus they can use the bedding touching the floor or the walls, so that has to be addressed also, which is covered in my link above.

>If I do have them, doing another long travel with just new clothes and suitcase is an hypothesis, provided they do die.

That won't work necessarily as they transfer themselves. If the suitcase can be opened and every surface inside and out cleaned, then it doesn't have to be disposed. If it can't, then finding a new suitcase that can be cleaned may be the option to consider, it's because the next trip you can get bb's again and with a cleaning (outside where they can drop off, not inside) it's good again.

The clothes, bedding etc., can be washed and dried on high heat (120 F) to kill both them and their eggs. Seal any dirty clothes in plastic bag airtight to await washing.

As long as you secure items properly and act paranoid, you can reduce their effects.
