I have long hair and wanted the "sock bun" look too- due to my anal-retentive personality of wanting my hair to be perfect & seeing my classmates in college who were ROTC with the most magnificent buns. I found a bun maker set that was exactly what I was looking for. I could never get the socks to work for me, and man did I destroy a ton of socks. Here's a link to what I bought:
