Get a Borescope.
AvE reviewed one of these jobbies awhile back. Durable? Probably not if you're using it all day every day, but for 20 bucks max? Sold.
Some come with little attachments too, like little mirrors, magnets, and hooks. And like 15 feet of cable.
Drill the back, use a flexible scope to see if there's anything inside. It's worth nothing more than scrap value in its current condition anyway.
Well, if you need to investigate further, one of these USB cameras might work for you:

What about one of these? DBPOWER 2Million Pixels 5M USB Waterproof HD 6LED Borescope Endoscope Inspection Tube Camera https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JERRES6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_wMoGwbN71F5WD
Haven't tried one but they seem plentiful online.
If the water is clear enough, try one of these first

You can probably take off some outlet covers & poke around.

I like using this to probe inside walls. I tape it to the end of wire fishing rods to go up vertically. Just gotta find an entry point. Outlet, light switch, etc. or just make a whole where it's easy to hide.
Only way to find out is cut that hole bigger and take a peek inside, maybe with an inspection snake camera. They can get expensive but this seems relatively cheap, Inspection Tube Camera
If you can make a tiny hole near the vent ducting, you could examine it with one of these:

Or run it through the inside of the vent, looking for holes and disconnects.
Now, I'm not in the medical field, don't play one on TV, and haven't stayed at any Hotels recently, let alone a Holiday Inn...
That said, wouldn't a borescope be a more accurate simulation?
Totally want a set of little graspers though....
