sounds like you're better off hiring an electrician. changing from 2-wire to 3-wire is not something that I would recommend for a homeowner that is handy with tools.
if you are willing to buy handheld remote controls or an electronic wall switch (a fan/light remote control, but the control is installed in the wall in place of your on/off switch), you'll be able to control the fan and light independently.
edit: the fan/light control that I'm referring to is a universal wireless remote control that can control fan and lights independently with just a 2-wire circuit. this is just 1 of the possible switches you could use.
