no, thats white van scam trash. Anything under 300 will be hard to get a good projector.

If you can save a bit more, for 349 dollars you can get an Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished. That projector is 720p and with 3000 lumens is pretty good. It also has HDMI.

You mention you dont need HD, there are several projectors with SVGA resolution and 2000+ lumens from reputable brands for 300 or less on amazon. Just buy from a known brand.

Nah, short throw is like 4ft or less.

If you don't mind refurbished, look at the Epson 730HD (gives you ~110" from 12ft).

Buy once, cry once.

Any cheap Epson or other name brand should do fine. Check the native resolution too.

My first projector was a $100 chinese projector, here it is. I looked at the pictures and figured that it looked good for what it was, I wasn't sure what to really expect. If a $100 projector is going to be your first projector then there's probably still going to be a 'Wow!' effect due to the sheer size of the picture even if the colors do look washed out, and it has to be completely dark to see anything.

I returned it and haven't bought a projector since but that's because I'm saving up and doing research on projectors every day. Your chromecast will likely work with the projector (because my Chromecast worked on that $100 'Whalestone').

It's hard finding quality, cheap projectors so if you want something nice then you're going to have to used, refurbished or just save up more. I've posted about the LG PH300 before, it's the one I've been most interested in recently (but I've never owned) as a 'cheap' projector. It's 720p HD, very small size, good contrast ratio and meant to be used in dim, dark settings. Here is a review of the LG PH300 on Projector Central. It goes Refurbished goes for $200-$250 on Amazon/eBay if you're ok with that, do some research on it. I can't find anything cheaper, that's as good as bang for buck as that LG. It's bulbless too, so you don't have to worry about paying $79-$300 every 3,500-7,000 hours when the bulb dies. You're basically sacrificing quality (1080p, only one HDMI port, very weak speakers) for a low price.

EDIT: The Refurbished Epson 730HD is another 720p projector that would be much brighter than the LG I recommended. Bulb-based.

I have nothing to say about the projector you are looking at, but I purchased the Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished projector for the exact same purpose. It has been great so far. I think the projector you are looking at is only 1000 lumens, which might be to dim for outside viewing. Not sure if Vivitek makes reliable products, but if you want something to enjoy for years to come, I would chose a reputable company.
