We do have a way of measuring it. It's called body fat percentage. And it's easily measurable, here's a bathroom scale that does it

And we're not arguing about how some organization defines the US in obesity, we're arguing whether the US is actually as obese as it's said to be. And that is clearly not true.

Is the US obese? Yes. Is the US highly obese? Yes. Is the US the most obese country in the world? Not even close. Just estimating based on the chart I linked, I'd say we're closer to #18-20 when you actually use body fat percentage.

I second this. I recommend this scale. It's not perfect but it seems pretty good. And the price is not bad at all. Like mentioned, it's good to give me an idea whether I'm going up or down; I don't focus so much on the exact reading it gives me but I believe it is in the correct ballpark give or take.

It lets you program yourself in using height, age, and sex. After you step on it tells you your weight, body fat %, and water %. You can program 10 different users, which is pretty awesome if you have multiple family members using it. It looks really nice too and is very sturdy.

Escali BFBW200. Remembers multiple profiles, pretty intuitive, and has been accurate compared to when I go to the doctor.

Picked up one of these from a cheap Groupon deal a few months back.

It's OK but at the end of the day, I don't believe it's any better than anything else out there. They all seem to be sub-par despite the price point. Mine has been good for tracking fat loss so I'd suspect most will meet that need and price-point won't get you a much worse/better product.

I got this scale through Groupon a year or two ago, and still see it pop up on there every so often, so if you keep your eye out for it, you might get a deal. I got it for under $30. It can remember age and gender for multiple users to give you weight, body fat, and water percentages. I track my weight and body fat on MFP and FitBit. If I had a smart scale, like an Aria or a Withings, I wouldn't have to input the numbers manually, but otherwise, it tracks my weight and body comp just as well, but for cheap.

I'll second that one. I actually find it may over estimate the BF% a tad, at least for me, which can be a good motivator.

This is what I use. It tells me how much fat I have so I really know how much I'm loosing. Just be sure to do it in the morning before you eat anything and before you drink anything because the pulse will react differently if you have a different amount of water in your body. So if i do it one day right when I wake up then another day after dinner, the reading won't be accurate. I always do it in the morning. I also use one of these to measure my waist, arms, legs, neck, and chest to see where I'm loosing. I'm telling you, your mind plays all kind of weird tricks on you when you're trying to get fit because even though you're working out and eating awesome, you can still feel like nothing is working. For me, I've gotta prove it to myself. Having something to measure my health other than how I feel about myself when I look into the mirror helps.

Also, instead of measuring weight, you want to measure body fat %. The following scale does a pretty good job of it. Weight fluctuates wildly. Fat % doesn't nearly as much.

  • A redditor put together this site to use for visual body fat percentage estimates. It's not super well populated, but I think it's better than the other visual estimate site that normally gets referenced.
  • There are a variety of websites that will estimate your body fat according to your measurements. I like IIFYM because they've got a great TDEE calculator, too.
  • You can use a hand-held bioelectric impedance tool to estimate your body fat, or there are bathroom scales that use the same method.
  • Josh-j mentioned calipers, but these can be tricky to use alone and consistently.

    That gets me to my last point: no matter what home method you use to estimate your body fat, be consistent. These are estimates and you might find that you get a different reading from your scale, your calipers, and the internet on the very same day. Body fat % a great way to track trends in your body composition, and you won't see those as effectively if you just back and forth between measurement methods. Unless you want to get a DEXA scan every week, the very precise number is less important than seeing trends.

The only thing I would add is this:

Consider getting a bathroom scale so you can do easy weigh ins. something like this:

For me when I'm losing weight seeing that number go down is very encouraging, and helps keep you on track and motivated(which is also why I do daily weigh ins). The downside is when you do plateau, and you will, it can be discouraging. When that happens to me I go back and look at the graph of my loss and see that I do keep losing, and I will continue to keep losing as long as I stick with it.

Also, read the FAQ if you haven't already, exercise is great but you will lose more through correct diet than exercise.

Also, any time you need motivation look through the hall of fame and r/progresspics and it will keep you on track.
