Prolexic (now part of Akamai) is a DDoS mitigation service founded by Barrett Lyon. If you have the time or desire, I highly recommend Fatal System Error, which is an account of how Prolexic came into being and Lyon's personal involvement with tracking down various cyber-criminals.

No, what's sketchy about it? Prolexic is one of the first (or maybe the first) anti-DDoS companies. Here's a whole book about them.

You shouldn't post here when you're "noob as fuck," you'll just get yourself into trouble. Lurk moar.

> I just don't understand why groups like the lizard squad don't DDoS companies where hours of down-time cause millions of dollars of lost revenue

They have been for at least a decade. Read, "Fatal System Error". It's a great, non-technical book that describes cyber crime and is mostly focused on DDoS / extortion and the good guys fighting against it. Fascinating book that will probably scare you off the internet for a while...

Scareware and scams are not advertisements at all and they don't come from legitimate companies. These kinds of scams are the product of organized crime (usually out of Eastern Europe). They don't propagate scareware through traditional advertising channels, it's mostly through infected websites.

This has been going on for years and is well documented: couple of sources for you. I hope your family member cancelled his credit card after using it, the card number was almost certainly sold on the black market.
