Unfortunately I do not know how it writes yet, I am waiting on ink to be delivered.
Update: The ink arrived! It is smooth, writes well, no stops or tracks. As far as beginner pens go, I think my mom made a great pick!
Would this make a good starter pen?
OK, well that was just a tester. What I mean is that's it's actually a pretty shitty pen. Like a student guitar sucks, so does that pen. And it is "scratchy." Which, you said was bad for you.
That one has a rather fat barrel, too. But, to be honest, all of the "traditional" fountain pens are like that. Because they are holding an ink cartridge that is kind of fat.

But, that might also suffer from the "Being fat" problem. Have a look and you decide.
One of the really nice things about a (good!) fountain pen is that if it is touching the paper at all, it's transferring ink. There is no need to drag the pen across the paper. Which would help you a lot.
You mentioned gel pens. For them, I found the Pilot G2 pens to be the best in show.

After using it a bit, my sample isn't terrible. It writes about as well as my metro does, but the converter is a little iffy fit. Mine seems to write a rather wet medium line. The reviews seem to complain of some durability problems. You could probably do worse, but it won't be as solid as the metro.
How about something like This I love fountain pens myself, they are so addicting to write with and so smooth. Mine recently broke on me so I'm missing it, if I can help another pen lover find one they love, than it will be good.

How do you like that pen? I got one from the pens gift exchange that is surely exactly the same pen with a different brand. It's smooth, but almost definitely has a bad case of baby's bottom that I have yet to smooth out. It also looks like your's was much cheaper than the one I was given.
