I bought a Fox Titan vest for downhill last year and I love it:

I got lucky and found one on Pinkbike for $100 that had never been used. Even at $150 I think its worth it.

Oh man I don't know much about sleek or cool looking or compact or breathable but I wear a Fox Titan, and it is close to as ridiculous-looking as possible, quite warm (although certainly as breathable as full torso crash armor could be), and fairly difficult to pack away compactly. It does have a lot of flat surfaces onto which reflective tape can be slapped, which is nice.

In general for road biking, the places that are going to take most impacts are your upper arms/sides of shoulders, your hips, and your hands (so wear gloves). Elbows and knees are less likely to be hurt because most of the time your impact will be falling over on your side. Practice not sticking your hand out and just taking the impact on your shoulder; hands and wrists tend to get fucked up pretty bad in falls if they're the first contact with the ground.

You wanna go with hard plastic shell outer layer rather than soft padding outers because soft shit will catch in the blacktop and make you tumble, potentially hurting you worse due to twisting. Hard plastic makes you slide, which means ideally only the initial impact is injurious.

I like the Titan because it's got good shoulder protection, and more importantly, spine protection. I haven't bitten the bullet and gotten hip armor shorts yet because I wear jeans to bike and am unwilling to buy jeans baggy enough to fit the armor under. Good biking jeans (I wear some from swrve.us) will do you better in terms of road rash than knee pads.

Since I started wearing armor, I've crashed out several times, including on wet leaves and last winter, when I slid out on ice going about 20. So far no road rash and only injuries being bruises on my hip of varying severity.

One big word of advice is to avoid the cheap knockoff Chinese shit on Amazon. It falls apart real quick and the padding is flimsy.

Also get yourself a delicates laundry bag to pack your armor in for washing so the mesh doesn't get all stretched out, wash as infrequently as possible to minimize wear and tear, and stick that ish in the freezer on the reg to kill stankteria.

After both of my shoulders took hits this year, I invested in a jacket. I may look odd on the trails but I’ve had 2 falls with the jacket on and was perfectly fine. Great use of money in my opinion. Get well sir!
