An ordeal doesn't have to still be causing pain to still be a problem. My dad drank every day of my life and I love the guy, like hanging out with him even, but being raised by a functioning alcoholic (and a co-dependent mother) did lead to my internalizing some not-so-optimal life strategies.
But until I went to a few meetings, I hadn't made the connection between my dad's drinking and, say, my inability to trust people. Hell, I didn't even know people could trust each other! I just assumed everyone was supposed to be all sneaky and shit, and never talk about anything.
If AlAnon meetings are a bridge too far, maybe check out From Survival to Recovery and see if it doesn't resonate.
Try out some Aca meetings if you can. Also the al anon approved Aca book "from survoval to recovery" is a great resource.
