Get a can of bear spray. Crazy guy won't be doing much more than laying on the ground whimpering after you hit him with that.
If you're worried about feeling unsafe, consider taking bear spray even if you're not in a bear area. Works on more than just bears. ;) Remember it's useless way down inside your pack. Keep it in one of your side pockets.
For a broken leg or other medical emergency on a solo, consider getting a PLB. Expensive, but it could save your life.
Check if your phone has a GPS function, and if you can use it when you're out of service area, to help if you get lost. You may need a special app.
(yes, I have bear spray + PLB + GPS, and I solo frequently)
