The 'safety indicator' is on their normal models and it's a red ring of rubber inside of the black, so you can let them chew away until you see red, then you send it in for a new one.
We live in MN and it's common to be -25F (without windchill). At that temp, his feet freeze so bathroom breaks are quick. At -10, he'd be shivering, but with the fleece jacket, he doesn't seem to mind one bit. We bought it for outside only, but he loves it so much that we let him wear it full time (minus washes obviously). I'm really happy with the quality.
