I also have this because I have cloth seats in my Jeep and labs shed like crazy. It's great for hiking and river adventures and keeps him from tumbling around. It's held up really well so far.

My lab is the same age and he loves to walk around and stick his head out the window. He rarely lays down but he will once he gets tired enough. Trust me, your boy should be the same way lol. If possible maybe exercise him really good the day before/morning of? That way he's already burned off some energy and isn't so wound up. Of course bring plenty of water. Amazon also has a dog water bottle that is absolutely fantastic and compact.

We bring our dog's dog bed camping with us. I think it is good for her to have something familiar and a place for her to lay that feels like her's. Also, we always bring a tie out stake and cable to hook to her harness when we are hanging out at our campsite.

Bring the little guy water and something he feels comfortable drinking out (our's loves her Gulpy)of and maybe a dog carrier/sling for if he gets tired and you have to wear/carry him.

When it's really hot in summer, I'll dump a bottle of water on my dog early in the run. She's dry by the time we get home, and it keeps her cool. She's got really thick black fur, this works well in the hot sun.

Also, she's picky about what she drinks out of. We tried that Gulpy water bottle and she refused to touch it. Then I got the Ollydog Bottle and now she'll drink out of that little reservoir (I'll put links so you can see both bottles at the end of this.). Something about it being on the ground and not me holding it? I give up. On runs, though, she DOES need to slow down significantly to be willing to drink and it can take her a few minutes to get around to drinking. If you're not going much more than three miles at a stretch, it's probably not even necessary for him to drink during your breaks. More than five miles or so, it might be more critical to take a long enough break to get in some water.

I have never seen someone use a metal ball type water bottle for a dog, I don't see how they could effectively drink from that.

I have a bottle of this type (not this brand, I just got this link to show you, not sure if these are any good) and I am quite happy with it! You squeeze it and it fills the tray and your pup can lap it up just like he would from a bowl.
