Being able to apply a little grease to make social interactions go more smoothly helps. If you haven't already, you might want to read this. It's a stupid title for a very useful little handbook of basic social skills. It's literally written for people like us who don't intuit social things and need to have them spelled out. It's easy to read and what you learn in there will really work.
Some advice my Old World aristocratic grandma gave me has gotten me through a lot of social situations: smile and be polite. It's not fool-proof but it goes pretty far.
If all else fails go into the bathroom and while you flush the toilet say rude things about them under your breath (make sure you can't be overheard). I've gotten through many a party that way.
