First walk into a couple of your local filtration shops as they are used to dealing with your local water and they know the problems.

You can also just have a look at amazon and get something like this- https://www.amazon.com/APEC-Certified-Drinking-Water-RO-90/dp/B00HRHHFPW That is rated for 90 gallons a day. Realistically 60 is probably pushing it but whatever. Use a toilet tank float valve on your reservoir or barrel to auto shut off when it is full.

But you don’t need the faucet or the pressure tank. Just run continuous flow.

You may want to buy a much higher rated system so you are not constantly changing filters or maybe also add a very large 5 micron pre-filter before this system to catch more crud and particles before these small filters do. Many stages of progressively finer filters is smart.

If you have a little more budget look at something like this- https://www.amazon.com/Hydro-31023-Evolution-RO1000-system/dp/B004LNUNKE

Thanks for replying. You're right - it's pretty high. Everything unsoftened is covered in scale. I guess I will have to get the hardwater nutes.

As for an RO system, I'm currently looking at this one. It's quite pricey, and I've already dropped quite a bit on my project, so I wanted to see if I could swing it without. But I suppose if I run into nutrient/pH issues and the plants die, I'll have to spring for it. Thanks again.

how big is your brewery? some small RO systems out there will do 750-1000 gallons / day and are fairly cheap (<$1k).

they're not 100% efficient but will still be a marked improvement for you.

Welcome to the reef world sir!

There are a few points to consider with the water loss, a chiller is obviously ideal for the HO lights and other reasons, but if you have a sump for air exchange you can easily get away with glass tops to minimize water evap but there is a bit of salt creep then.

The RO water, you could always collect the waste water and use it for other purposes, I have even seen some people create recirculation systems so the ratio is reduced, there are more expense systems with 1:1 ratios as well. Here is a link to a 2:1 ratio system, http://www.amazon.com/Hydro-Logic-31023-1000-GPD-Evolution-RO1000/dp/B004LNUNKE , Im sure there are others out there.

Per the skimmer, I would suggest an ATO system, I use http://www.amazon.com/JBJ-Automatic-Water-Controller-Aquarium/dp/B001JK70K8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453235244&sr=8-2&keywords=auto+top+off . To keep the water level consistent so that the skimmer can be dialed in for the perfect skim and not need adjusted unless cleaned.

I personally use Red Sea Coral Pro for my salt and I don't have to change as often, and run an alcohol dosing schedule to minimize salt costs. I change 20 gallons every 2 weeks from my 200 gallon aquarium, but dose with Red Sea N03:P04 daily.

I have had the tank running for 2 years now still going great.

Welcome to the hobby again and I hope you enjoy it and the cool things the tank will spawn.
