Remove the drive from the laptop and hook it up to a secondary computer with something like this:

Would you be able to then type in the bitlocker password to mount it as a D: drive? Or is it tied to hardware?

Sure all the data will still be there. To access it you can put the iMac into target disk mode which turns the iMac into an external drive. The only problem with that is then connecting the iMac to another Mac via FireWire and then other dongles, it depends what Mac you are plugging it into as to what dongles you need and they come at a cost. For that reason it is normally easier to remove the hard drive from inside the iMac, which is not to difficult if you follow iFixit’s guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+20-Inch+EMC+2133+and+2210+Hard+Drive+Replacement/1008. Once you have removed the hard drive you can then plug the hard drive into any SATA 3.5” to usb caddy and plug that into another Mac via usb to access all of the data.

you don't even need an enclosure (there is nothing mechanical in an SSD, so no vibration, no noise, ....)

just use a usb 3.0 to sata adapter like this for example https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N4JUOI2/ref=sspa_dk_detail_11?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00N4JUOI2

you don't even need the power supply part for SSD as the usb 3.0 can transfer enough power for it
