The cups go over your ears and completely seal them off. They have a silicone skirt like on the mask and tubes connected to the mask for proper equalization. My husband uses them to snorkel and lightly free dive (to around 25 ft) because he still has a hole in one ear from tubes. I can't personally vouch for them for actual diving since we're not certified yet, but there are people on scubaboard.com who have used them for actual diving, which is where I first read about it. You might wanna look up the discussions on it. Even if you don't outright dive, it could at least get you back under water.
My husband could never submerge his head at all his whole life until he got this mask. If he so much as gets water in his ear during a shower he gets an infection. It opened up a whole new world to him that he otherwise never could have experienced. The only down side is you HAVE to shave your head smooth pretty high up your head, because any hair will keep the cups from sealing just like with facial hair and a mask. So you either need to have a weird haircut or just shave completely bald.
