You might prepare him by reading a book like Jacob's New Dress, which features a protagonist very much like your son (a boy who discovers how much fun wearing a dress is and asks his mom if he can wear one to school, and she reacts quite similarly to you!). It does a nice job of reinforcing that there's nothing wrong with a boy wearing a dress, just that there are people who mistakenly believe some clothes (or toys, or colors) are only for girls or only for boys, so they might be a little confused by his choice at first but that doesn't mean he's doing anything wrong!

I came out when my youngest niece was 5 years old. I gave her a copy of the book I Am Jazz. I have also heard the books Jacob's New Dress and Annie's Plaid Shirt are good.
