Ok, yep, your thinking is right, but there's a workaround. If you connect your console to a cheap hdmi splitter, you can then run a short hdmi cable from the splitter to your TV, then the fiber hdmi cable from the splitter to your elgato. If you have more than one console, you could get a splitter with more inputs (called an hdmi matrix), but those are more expensive.
Id recommend looking into an HDMI splitter. Heres a cheap decent one off amazon

The main reason is VGA sucks ass and doesnt support anywhere near as much throughput as HMDI or DP. This will enable you to have everything through one connection from your computer and then you could use shorter HDMI cables so you dont have a mess in the back.
