Friday night I went to a company holiday party looking like this (note to self: clean mirror). It's the first opportunity I've gotten to wear this suit so that was fun.

What made it even better was that they had an unexpected raffle and I won an Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablet.

Oh wait this is supposed to be about romance? Uhh I have a date tomorrow after work, does that count?

Those aren't bad, but if reading is your priority, wouldn't you do better with something like the Kindle Fire HDX?

> You can't play Minecraft on a Kindle

Kindle Fire HDX can.

You're an idiot or troll, both likely. Trying to be a pedant and you're wrong.

This is merely a random example I found by searching for "allwinner tablet" (Allwinner is a Chinese company who mass produces cheap SoCs) and not a specific product recommendation: $53 tablet. Stuff in this general class has been for sale for a while, though they cost a bit more (~$70) when I bought one a couple years ago.

I repeat that it's not a recommendation, unless you have an intellectual or technological curiosity about what it's like to use low-end tablets and consider the purchase price as a disposable amusement with low expectations. (How's that for a disclaimer?) Notice the resolution, which might be particularly inappropriate for /r/cordcutters.

They're for real and do work, though. And that's a true old-school cost+markup, definitely without any subsidy they intend to recoup through locked-in-services.

(It just occurred to me that I've seen a local brewpub using iPads (!!) for nothing more than running a point-of-sale system. They must have money to burn, because that's exactly the kind of undemanding application that this sort of equipment might actually be good for.)

When I looked up the Fire a few hours ago I landed on this $179 one but now I see that's one of their more expensive models, and you're right, they have a $99 one. That $99 Fire does look like slightly better hardware than the $53 example I gave, but if you can't just install whatever you want on it (like you can with the Chinese ones) then it doesn't look like a very exciting deal.

I'm skeptical of any claims that Amazon is selling their Fire at below cost. People might not realize how absurdly cheap this kind of stuff has become to make.

If she loves Netflix ---- obvious answer is THIS. She can stick it in her purse, watch it on her lunch breaks, read books, download apps, etc!
If she's got a tablet, then why not some cozy headphones or earmuffs <3 867-5309

> Because google is for-profit organization, of course they need to have some revenue from making whole operating system. Their way to do so is Google Play, but they do not limit your freedom in the way apple does, you are still free to do anything the hell you want with your device.

Apple releases portions of iOS and OS X as open source software, free of charge. Does this put them on equal footing with Google? After all, you have the kernel and many of the libraries and utilities in there.

Google doesn't manufacture the device. Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc. manufacture them and dictate what you can and cannot do with the hardware. If I build my own device from the Apple open-source components, I would arguably have as much freedom as I do on an Android device I custom-build and put Android on.

> You LITERALLY just have to install 3rd party app, no?

You have to connect your Kindle to another device to transfer the files, and deal with the "occasional alert pop up" as the apps repeatedly crash on your device. Hardly a great, highly compatible experience.

> Not google, some guy over at Lifehacker does.

Ok, fair enough. But take a look at what's going on: Both Amazon and Microsoft/Nokia are now building Android devices, sans Google Play and with their own app markets. If the app market place isn't the critical piece, why are Microsoft and Amazon competing with it? Why is Amazon further segmenting the market by skipping over most Android devices for their streaming video app? Why is Microsoft undercutting the Windows Phone market to invest in Android devices that are tied to a Microsoft app store?

Those would be my considerations for that price range. They should all do what you want to fairly well. Obviously you'll have to weigh the options as far as screen size and internal storage goes. Almost all of these tablets also have different versions. The 32GB tablets I listed all have cheaper 16GB versions, and the 8" tablets all have 7" variants as well. I just included some different combinations for variety.

As a note of comparison, unless you get the 2nd generation iPad mini with the retina display, the screen is an 8" 1024x768, the lowest resolution amongst them. That's the main mark against it because while the specs of the mini are also paltry in comparison to those above (1GHz dual core, 512MB RAM), it's an Apple so it doesn't matter as much.
