You won't be able to use the windows installer to install it to a different drive from within windows.

Pick up a bigger flash drive, you can get one for dirt cheap. If you have a uefi bios on your motherboard then instead of using create media use create image or iso, whatever it says, then use a program called rufus to write that to the flash drive and set it to use gpt partition for uefi. It's method 2 on that page. Make sure when selecting boot device to select the uefi method.

The best thing to do is to format the old hdd and format it and start clean with it.

Yes, the drive is USB3 and the motherboard port is reliable.

Right now I'm installing liveroot, as I have more RAM than storage, I'll see how that goes.
