Take your time. if you screw up wipe it off with a damp rag immediately and try again.
Personally, I'm a fan of Krylon.
That's a good question. My guess is that any improvement would be negligible, or unnoticeable. Because the light would not reflect really. This would be much better than sanding, and approaching mylar or an actual mirror.

edit; I would use 1 inch masking or painters tape on the surface to be painted, framing it out, while also covering the sides, so you don't get any paint near the edge or corners, which will keep it from being visible.
