Entirely depends on your budget - but at the very least something with Force Feedback, like the Logitech g29 with shifter - that's a very common setup. $200-450 is the figure you'd be looking at - depending on if what you want is on sale. A bit cheaper if you don't want a shifter and want to use the paddle shifters behind the wheels.

I chose one a little higher priced, the Thrustmaster T300RS GT edition (3 pedal setup not the cheaper 2 pedal one without the clutch) as well as the TH8A shifter. I got the wheel on sale, full price on shifter. https://i.imgur.com/Y8Gg5oO.jpg

These wheels are much more than toys. You can feel the wheels on the road, traction loss, how much torque the cars have, if you slam into a wall the wheels can damn near rip your hands off (you can change the % of feedback to lower it). It makes the experience in VR feel super real. I'd say a wheel carries as much importance in VR racing as the headset does.

The craziest feeling I've gotten so far as just sitting at the start of a race idling in a '66 Mustang. The entire hood of this car is shaking back and forth like Dom's muscle cars in Fast and the Furious.....and the WHEEL is shaking left and right with the car exactly how you would expect something with that much power to. That thing was like 100% torque and it felt amazing.

Even if it takes some saving, I highly recommend one of them - although I would definitely wait until Black Friday to get $100 ish off of either one you choose. The sale prices for these are quite tolerable when they occur.

A stand for the wheel is much nicer than a table for mounting, but they can be pricey as well. From $100 and up. My Apiga AP2 stand was $280 but worth every penny to not have a bar in between your legs. Only $240 now and supports most wheels. https://www.amazon.com/APIGA-Foldable-Racing-Simulator-gearshift-ALL/dp/B00XBPYUIY

Or you could buy it brand new for $300.

I got it on sale at Amazon for $200 without shifter. Shifter adds $50.

Depends on how much that table is worth to you, I guess. But the wheel is great.

it's a matter of price in the end, but here's my ramblings.

The Logitech path sets you back $300 for a complete set.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Dual-Motor-Feedback-Driving-Responsive/dp/B016JBE8LU/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1539590704&sr=1-4&keywords=logitech%2Bg29&th=1

However, there's no upgrade path from there, and if you decide to eventually upgrade to another wheel, you'll need an adapter for both the pedals and the shifter. Additionally, the FFB is not as good as the T300RS or equivalent systems and the shifter is worse than the TH8A, and is 6+R, not 7+R.

The Thrustmaster equivalent would be a T300RS or TX System (they are apparently equivalent).
Including the Shifter, it sets you back about $550.

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Racing-Wheel-Leather-Premium-Official/dp/B0151K6FPC/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1539590463&sr=1-1&keywords=thrustmaster%2Btx&th=1

Comparing to the Logitech, the FFB is better. From what I've heard, the pedals are similar in quality.

I've used the G27 shifter and I own the TH8A and the thrustmaster is quite a bit better, and can be put in sequential mode as well. Additionally, it can be used as an analogue handbrake, which is pretty cool for the price. The shifter can also be connected by USB, so that's a component you'd be able to keep should you decide to upgrade in the future.

Also, Thrustmaster makes a variety of bases, some more high-end than what you're looking at, so you'd have an upgrade path without switching manufacturers and having to find a solution for pedals.

As for the TMX Pro, the wheel + the T3pa pedals + the shifter cost around $415. (look at the proposed sets)

However, I would not buy the T3pa's separately. If you buy separate pedals, I'd go for the Fanatec CSL Elite Pedals with the Loadcell Brake. They are more expensive, but a lot better and have USB connectivity, should you switch manufacturers in the future.

I hope I've not confused you too much.

In conclusion:

Logitech
-> Ok Force Feedback, Ok Pedals, Meh Shifter $300 | No Upgrade Path

T300 (VG TX) incl T3pa + TH8A
-> Good Force Feedback, Ok Pedals, Good Shifter $550 | Upgrade Path for Wheel base/Rims

TMX Pro + Fanatec CSL Elite LC + TH8A ->
Ok Force Feedback, Great Pedals, Good Shifter $550 | Upgrade Path unlimited, all separately connected via USB.

All that said, it depends a lot on how serious you want to get. If you already know that you're not going to go full sim-racing, the Logitech is going to be plenty good enough for you.

However, if you want to start sim-racing seriously, and are looking at games such as iRacing, RaceRoom, rFactor, pCars, Assetto Corsa and the like, good pedals make you quicker than good wheels

It depends. It's not your usual driving game. It is shower and requires I've to be more methodical. It can be almost meditative in a way. I really enjoy it, but I've also wanted to be a trucker for as long as I can remember (don't like being away from home most of the time so mad props to truckers).

I would not recommend it if you don't plan to use/buy a steering wheel, pedals, and shifter. I really like driving games so I went in for a really nice one.

Here for 239$ + tax. It's gone now though.

Also the G29 is currently the same price. PS4 and PC compatible and has more buttons and LED rev-lights but otherwise the same thing.

Here is the Shifter + G29 bundle for $255

Unfortunately the PlaySeat shifter mount is sold separately. Here is a link

There are a bunch of 3D printed ones on eBay for a fraction of the price... I would check those out

Here's a list for PC parts that I recommend to my friends and people I work with when they want to build a PC on a budget.

There's a couple things like SATA cables and thermal gel (To glue the CPU to the motherboard) missing from this list, but if your dad is PC savvy, then he should know to get those. Also if there isn't a USB drive with an install of a Windows OS around your house then you'll need to look into a disk drive and a Windows OS disk. iRacing only runs on Windows OS as of last year.

You need to keep in mind that iRacing is NOT a cheap hobby. All I run is NASCAR stuff (A Open and NiS Open, these are the series' for the Cup car) and I've got to be close to at least $600 deep into it just off the NASCAR content alone.

As far as wheels and pedals go, you can get a wheel and pedals for $200 or less, but it's not going to be anything of real high quality, and you probably aren't going to have a ton of fun with it.

I would recommend looking into getting the Logitech G29/G920. The G29 and G920 are the same wheel, but the G29 comes with more buttons on the wheel itself than the G920.
