I suggest that you check out /r/magnetfishing for lots of good info and to see what others are finding. Also, try searching Youtube.com for lots of interesting videos on what can be found. I have mostly found junk! But, I keep some of the junk and may sell it as scrap one of these days.

If I had it to do over, I would probably have purchased a double sided magnet. Probably something over 1500 pounds. It's just my guess and from a little research, that the double sided would work better. The reason being, is the magnet will lay flat on the riverbed surface and be more likely to attach to something. Conversely, my magnet drags around on its side. Just dragging my magnet through the yard, metal has to be fairly close before it attaches.
The "holy grail" for magnet fishers is to find a gun. I'm not so excited about this possibility, I simply like to find things. Finding a gun has a few problems - What do you do with it? Was it involved in a crime? My guess is that if you find one, it's probably been involved in a crime, so I would probably turn it in (maybe).
Other tips: the process can be a dirty one, dress accordingly. You will definitely get wet. Be prepared to know how to get your magnet unstuck. There are methods that you can find in the magnetfishing group I mentioned above. Take a hammer and a block of wood so that you can remove your magnet if you get it stuck to something flat. Be careful with these magnets, they are very strong and can do some damage. I got mine stuck to the side of my truck once - not fun. Thankfully my truck is a '91 model and the marks the magnet left were nothing compared to the hole in the front fender!
