Have you considered using hair toys other than elastics? I can get a great fast, secure bun with a hair fork. There are lots of other kinds of clips, sticks, etc., and most of them work best for longer and thicker hair, which it sounds like you have.
I've been reading posts on here about ponytail options and alternatives and I found a link to a hair fork. I've never used one before, but I think I'll have to order one and try it out!
