I could have written your post word for word. Try the Melissa and Doug removable stickers. www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Habitats-Reusable-Sticker/dp/B004PBN9BC They have consistently given me 20 minutes of peace since my son was about 18 months old. They are amazing and only $5 a set. Rotating his toys helps, too.

We bought the Melissa and Doug reusable sticker book. He had fun taking them off the page (with our help) and putting them on the other sheet.
We flew a lot of red eyes around that age and weren't against giving him benedryl to help him sleep either.

For the age appropriate crafts, I suggest a sticker book. My five year old will play with them for some length of time. One brand that makes them is "Melissa and Doug". Here is one example of many styles and themes.

You can also get a box of crayons, markers and paper. Most five year olds love to draw. Other crafty stuff might include pipe cleaners, kid scissors, a glue stick and foam sheets or foam cutouts.

Also, I think it's cool that you are OK with this, but make sure the manager (grandma) sees that the kid is with you so you don't get called out for "bad work performance" when you are essentially doing your job and also keeping an eye on her granddaughter. Not knowing the whole situation, this sounds like the making of a double standard where the boss can bring a kid to work but if the workers tried to pull this they'd be told it was inappropriate. But I'm guessing that this might be the end result of someone having a really tough time and/or temporary until school starts, so sometimes you do what you have to do.
