How about a weighted vest? If you get one that you can up the weight incrementally as your fitness increases, you can really up the challenge without the joint stress of breaking into a run. It's not cheap but TOTALLY worth it!
ETA: I prefer this over weights in a backpack because the weight is evenly distributed from front to back. I don't like being unbalanced with a heavy back pack. It's hard on my neck and back.
