FWIW, if you need a USB broadband solution, I've had great success with the Huawei E3372. I've seen speeds up to 80Mbit/sec download.
This is HSPA+ only, not LTE, meaning it will only work on AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. And you won't get LTE speeds.

Depends on what type of coding of course. But if it's something simple like some python scripts or something, then just buy something with a normal processor (no ARM). And NOT a chromebook! Seriously, they suck. And that's it.
Higher requirements like the need to have multiple VM's open, large compiles, etc drives the specs up of course.
