For $129 you can get the Moto E which is regarded as easily the best phone in that price range. For another $70 you can get the Moto G which is considered to again be the best phone in that slightly more expensive price range. You can probably get your carrier to subsidize the cost of either of those phones, and you don't need a data connection to use the app.

2014 Moto G Global GSM is what I got as my first Android phone because of the small screen size. First thing I did after it came in the mail was follow the following tutorials to install CM.

How To Unlock The Motorola G (Moto G) Bootloader!

How To Install Custom Recovery and Root the Motorola G! (Moto G)

CyanogenMod 11 (CM11) on the Moto G! (How To Install, Backup, Setup, and etc!)

Moto G would suit your need well.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M for 170 bucks with 3g and great battery life.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M or with an sd card slot and 4g LTE for 220 bucks. possibly has a negligble amount less battery because of the LTE.

US GSM or
Gobal GSM? They are both there for me.

There is no such thing as the "Amazon model", Amazon is just a retailer.

I worked as tech support for a wireless carrier for almost a year and I can say with authority that both of those phone are horrific. No other way around it. If you do anything more than text messaging and phone calls then you will be dissappointed in either of those phones. And if that's all you do with your phone, why not just get a phone-first (aka not a smart phone)?

My reccomendation? moto G. This is a seriously amazing phone, and the 8gb version is $179 for unlocked, which is only 30 dollars more than the ones you linked. my two brothers each have one and it is a very very capable phone and they are quite satisfied with it. Since it looks like you're signing up for straight talk, you should be able to just buy the sim card from straight talk and then put that sim card inside your moto g. I would vastly reccomend this over either of the two choices you mentioned.

If you have a locked phone in the US (most phones), you can either:

  1. work on getting your phone unlocked, a sometimes difficult process, or even impossible (on verizon, if you have an iphone, for example, it's not unlockable).

  2. Buy a new phone in Brazil.

  3. Buy a new phone in the US.

Number 2 is a bad option, you're definitely not going to get a good phone for cheap in Brazil -- prices are 2.5x for phones what they are in the states, and the kind of throwaway phone you'd want is normally garbage, certainly without a quality camera.

Number 3 is the way to go. I like the Moto Gs -- they're incredibly popular in Brazil, so you won't stand out, and the first generation one has a decent camera and is a steal at $80. You can take this to a telecom store (Oi, Vivo, TIM) in a mall, and normally with a passport # they'll be able to give you a SIM card and get you on your way. Sometimes, they might suggest that you need a brazilian ID# (a CPF), and you don't actually, I've done it with passport info.

Still, bureaucracy and such in Brazil means that some stores will just say "No, you need a brazilian CPF", but your best shot is to go to one of the big malls in the Zona Sul (where are you staying, exactly?) and find someone who speaks English and tell them you need a limited plan to work for a couple weeks while you're in the country.

MAKE SURE you stay with them until your phone is activated and working -- if you don't speak portuguese, the activation-by-phone process would be nigh impossible.

Here are two phones -- the 1st generation is my go-to in brazil. Standard, not flashy, gets the job done, takes good pictures when the lighting is good.

I can't see those.

Reading the reviews it seems like most people get 3g with the moto g. How do the two compare?

I'm looking at http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00GWR373M/ref=mw_dp_olp the used one for 174, but I'm on my phone so I can't see any pictures and

Any thoughts?

Looking at the selection of off-contract phones on AT&T... Honestly, almost all of them suck.

The only good option on there is HTC's Desire 610, but it is 170 bucks, with a 8MP camera, great front-facing speakers, Kitkat out of the box, 8+64GB storage.

I didn't mention this phone before because it's 4.7 inches, so just a tad bigger, but if you think she'd be fine with it, it's a great phone for the price. Here's the link to it:
http://www.att.com/cellphones/htc/desire-610-prepaid.html

Alternatively, you could just get an unlocked phone off of Amazon. You'd probably have to spend just under 200 bucks for a decent one though.

A fan favorite is the 4.5 inch Moto G (1st gen):
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M/

$180 for the 16GB version, but do note that this phone isn't 4G LTE capable. The 4G version will cost $200.
I personally wouldn't get the Moto G just because it has no microSD card slot.

u/Paraless · 2 pointsr/AndroidQuestions

Not under $150, but just a little above: Motorola Moto G for $179

And probably better, for the same price, the HTC Desire 816. Cool design, front speakers, 13MP.

I'd personally buy the HTC. I don't know if it might be too big for you (5.5").

u/piratekingdan · 2 pointsr/GalaxyS3

Honestly, for that price, just get a Moto G. You won't get the 4G service, but you'll get official updates from Google and it'll run like a dream.

Edit: Helpful Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-Black/dp/B00GWR373M

For my money, a nexus 5 android phone for 350 USD.

If that isnt cheap enough get a moto G for 159-8gb/199-16gb

Sim card wise, picking up a local one is great, and I do it a lot but theres two options which are really amazing you should know about if you dont.

Get a T-Mobile us plan for 60/mo, itll give you [unlimited 128kb internet access in 100 countries] (http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/10/t-mobile-makes-data-roaming-free-in-100-countries-128kbps-but-still/) 128kb isnt amazing but its way better than nothing. It will easily keep up with twitter and facebook, and i love having it as a baseline/backup.

For faster speed, a three sim from any of these countries will work in the rest of them at full speed without roaming fees. (15pounds a month from a shop in the uk will get you unlimited 3g+ in 16 countries. This will work in many of your listed countries, us, aus, france, italy, switz and can be bought in many places.

8MP 5MP camera for 180 bucks. Mass producing JUST the cameras, come on man. This literally took me 2 seconds to come up with. And if you have a solid foundation of the economics of scale please let me know. But cloud technology? and better data storage technology? There is a plethora of options available and yes the cost isn't a drop in the bucket but its still very much an option. The only decision now is that PDs decide to roll with it if they feel its a good idea. And in fact the government could over the next 5 years or so create a plan that allows PDs that pick up such technology additional funding. This coupled along with falling tech prices seems like a path that has only a few obstacles.

Depends on the carrier, but the Moto E/G should meet the criteria for a fairly low price.

Moto G Global GSM Model, all models selectable from this link - Amazon

Moto E US GSM Model

u/fiah84 · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

> Hmm, looks like the "Unlocked" Moto G is much higher, like $250.

No, $200 for the 16GB version, $180 for the 8GB: http://amzn.com/B00GWR373M

u/jason217 · 1 pointr/MotoG

I'm ordering it from Amazon US and a third party shipping company. It's $179 and $199 for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively with free US shipping.

I would have to pay $250 if I purchased the 8GB model.

u/Winged_Waffle · 1 pointr/ting

If I buy the GSM version I can just BYOD like any other sprint phone? That's awesome! I'll probably do that then!

Does the 4g version work?

This is what you are talking about

But does this one work?

u/Rocketeer7 · 1 pointr/Hue

Planning an iOS release in the future but for now I'm perfecting the Android version. If you really want it you can pick up a low-cost Moto E or similar: https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-16GB-Unlocked-Quad-Core-Smartphone/dp/B00GWR373M/ref=pd_lpo_107_tr_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZGR2TFPZFSXP6314KT93

I have a couple of these around my home with the App loaded on it for guests.

u/d1cksl4pforcharity · 1 pointr/techsupport

Thanks! So you mean like this one? I do have amazon and I would definitely like to go through it if I can.

Just to make sure, so because this is unlocked, I wouldn't have to buy a data plan probably? And I could probably just pop my SIM card in there and it would work?

u/venn177 · 1 pointr/NoContract

So, I feel kind of bad abusing you by asking more questions, but is this the one you're talking about?

Glad to hear more good shit about the G bought this one two days ago to replace my 2 yr old phone and as well as switching carriers. Any suggestions/tips as Ive never had the experience of kit kat?

u/ss2man44 · 1 pointr/gaming

Maybe you should see the Motorola Moto G. The base model is $179 and it's a fast and durable smartphone. It's as cheap as you can go without getting something slow, frustrating, and/or fragile.

u/awer12345 · 1 pointr/Android

I am about to buy the moto g. On amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Global-Unlocked-16GB/dp/B00GWR373M/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1396280022&sr=8-4&keywords=moto+x) there are two options I can get: Global GSM and US GSM. I have att for my wireless network. Does it matter which one I get?

This is a cheap, off contract replacement that should arguably be an upgrade for your dad.

Probably one of your best bets on a replacement phone, should be able to pop out the sim card (or get a new one if it's the wrong size) and pop it into the new one. Service should transfer.
