Dude stop leasing your modem! Just buy your own! www.amazon.com/dp/B000JV9LUK/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_3gz9tb18VK71P

Get the same kind of modem you would for any cable ISP and buy your modem and router separate (trust me)

List of cable modems on amazon as sorted by popularity

My recommendation for a modem is either a Motorola
6121 or a 5101 Both will easily last you 4 years with the 5101 being cheaper but using older technology that 1) Limits you to ~35mbps actual speed and 2) slightly worse connection quality in some scenarios.

This is probably a better question for a tech subreddit since there is probably nothing specific to Cox in IV that should influence what modem or router to buy.

dang! i was hoping it wasn't a promotion but oh well, still saving $180 on the year...

My only problem now is that I am doing the speed tests and not getting to 50mb...so i did some looking at the modem i bought back in april 2011 and it says it can only max at 38mbs! DAMMIT!!

Any recommendations on modems you can make? I was looking this one but shit $68 is cutting into my $180 savings for the year....blahh i guess i shouldn't be upset but it is lame...

what modem are you using?

[modem] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000JV9LUK/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=used) (will support up to 30 meg download) router wireless g router, supports dd-wrt for those tech savvy of us.

after you buy the equipment, you can install yourself (given that your address has been serviced before), they try to make you get the kit in the mail, but you can just go pick it up (just call them after you have placed order and tell them you want to pick up the kit. ithas a couple coax cables and a splitter) total cost after shipping is roughly 30 bucks, the install is free, but that's 3 months worth of rentals for equipment you now own.

Buy this modem and never pay another stupid modem fee:

Keep in mind that it does not have wireless, so you still need a router.

I bought this modem used for a song, works great. This is the router I have, because it kept going on flash sale at one of those one sale per day sites.

The more important question is, does your cable ISP support that modem?

You're about to go on a journey here.

Basically you're being billed a "rental" fee for this router/modem combo they gave you. Something the tune to $7/month.
Reality is, you already have a router [so you simply need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem like this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Surfboard-SB5101-Cable-Modem/dp/B000JV9LUK/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1412691779&sr=1-3&keywords=docsis+3.0+cable+modem)

Now for the fun part:

You will need to plug in the new modem. Call 1-800-COMCAST and register it to their network. If everything works out you will need to go into a Comcast center to return the modem. FYI Comcast centers are usually hell on Earth. Bullet proof glass, folks who pay in cash, long lines and a lot of ornery people. Kind of like the cantina on Mos Isely only the journey you'll embark on will be less fun.

Now, remember to get a receipt. This is key as Comcast is notorious for not taking things off of bills properly and if you don't have proof they'll fight you tooth and nail.

Breakeven on your modem investment: 5-8 months depending on what they're billing you for the rental.

Until I moved back to NH and switched to Fairpoint, I was using one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Surfboard-SB5101-Cable-Modem/dp/B000JV9LUK

Quick, easy, compatible, less than $10 shipped for a used one, and fast enough for all low and mid range bandwidth plans.
