Oh, well obviously you just need a new router then, haha.

If you want a cheap one, go on and get one, I suppose. If you want a nice one, you'll be spending about $100.

I personally have this one, and if you want to go insane and get something you REALLY don't need, I suggest this.

:D

Modems are completely independent of if a router is dual-band or not. You can safely connect that modem to a dual-band router.

For dual-band routers, personally I'd see if you can stretch your budget a little higher. I have mixed opinions on those models (750) after using it. You don't maention how large of a coverage area you need but at a minimum I'd go to the N900:

$90 N900

$120 AC1750

And my favorite AC1900/R7000 which is nearly double your price but it has excellent coverage for a two story house even. I've been really happy with the performance.

The N900 (step up from the 750) I have used successfully as well. If you want to stay under $100 I'd go with it.

> Can you ping your pc which is connected over LAN?

I'm sorry, but I'm not entirely sure what exactly you mean by "ping." I'm just the guy who sets up my family's home networks. I'll need to google it first.

> you didn't connect your WAN port to your pc?

No, I did not connect the WAN port on the router to the LAN port on my PC. In the "new" setup, the WAN port was connected to the cable modem. The "old" setup is actually a combined modem+router. Links to pics of the back of the zoom gateway and the netgear router follow.

Yes and no.

Like i said: those combo routers are built for the average user, not what you guys are using it for. And the ISP only has to worry about 1 piece of hardware to be returned from an ended subscription rather than 2.

It has to do the work of both the modem and a full-on router, and is good at neither job.

Contact your ISP and see if there's a way to get just a cable modem, it will simply have a coaxial connection for the incoming cable and a single ethernet output. Then go shopping for a stand-alone router that suits your needs and purchase that yourself.

If i may, i suggest this router as it's one i've had for a handful of years with no problems.

That's the thing, it's rated for that. The amazon page for the router, seen here, says specifically "Gigabit wired - Ideal for HD gaming & video". Even so, would an Ethernet hub solve the issue? This, for example?

i appreciate your advice and i think you're 100% correct in going with a couple AC-LITEs instead.

would that still be a viable solution if this is my existing router? or should i need to update my router anyways?

Anything from netgear I have the netgear n900 and this thing is a beast. FYI when I bought mine it came with a lifetime warentee, and for those who know when you router dies it sucks, netgear with send you a new one for free if it dies, although I doubt it will, have had mine god knows how long and not one problem. Also if you use a cat5 cable to connect to your router, that's a hardline connection not WiFi.

If anyone browses this post again... I finally got it working near the speeds that Mediacom offers. Here is my final configuration.

  • Mediacom Cable Modem
  • Linksys AC3200 - Got it for $129 from Sams Club.
  • Netgear WNDR4500
  • All Cat6 wiring

Having the router plugged into the cable modem is where I saw the difference. My Surface Pro 4 was not producing accurate results with a direct connection to the cable modem. The Netgear Nighthawk would have produced slightly better results.

I am using Arris SB6183 but there is a newer version here and I use a Netgear WNDR4500

You can get cheaper versions of both or get one device that does both modem and wifi. I already had the router so I just bought the modem. You will find a list of approved modems on Crapcasts website just to be sure.

Had Comcast for over a year. I used ARRIS SURFboard SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem as my modem and NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Dual Band Gigabit Wifi Router which I flashed with DD-WRT as my router.

Never had an issue but of course YMMV.
