What starts as a recreational nano "drug" that allows something like telepathy becomes much more as some try to improve it, some try to destroy it, and some try to control it.

Nexus is very highly reviewed and I have been meaning to read it. It has 4.5 stars with 400+ reviews. It was also on NPR's must read list for 2013.

Amazon's Synopsis: Mankind gets an upgrade

In the near future, the experimental nano-drug Nexus can link humans together, mind to mind. There are some who want to improve it. There are some who want to eradicate it. And there are others who just want to exploit it.

When a young scientist is caught improving Nexus, he's thrust over his head into a world of danger and international espionage - for there is far more at stake than anyone realizes.

From the halls of academe to the halls of power, from the headquarters of an elite US agency in Washington DC to a secret lab beneath a top university in Shanghai, from the underground parties of San Francisco to the illegal biotech markets of Bangkok, from an international neuroscience conference to a remote monastery in the mountains of Thailand - Nexus is a thrill ride through a future on the brink of explosion.

Turing Evolved - David Kitson

When Ex-DEMON pilot Jon Carlson meets beautiful humanitarian Rachel, it's a match made in HEAVEN. Literally, because Rachel's an ANGEL. She's also an AI controlled android of immense power and capability. As Jon finds himself drawn into the world of these enigmatic creations of mankind, he unknowingly becomes involved in a program to create autonomous superweapons intended to fight the next war.

It's a first time author and I think I got it for free at one point on kindle. He's done an excellent job here and though there are some editorial mistakes in it it's just a good read.

An excellently realized world with fascinating characters. The premise may have roots in other works of fiction but this is an interesting take on the concept and is overall excellently done.

I read a cool book based on the exact same premise of nanobots in the brain awhile back. It doesn't relate to your specific problem, but it could be an interesting read related to what you're writing (unless you wrote it!)

Injectable nanobots that are a general-purpose computer, and body-hacking mechanism all in one convenient package. See Nexus.

Mostly relevant novel: Nexus by Ramez Naam. Not about dreaming, but about linking people together mind to mind. Cool book.

FYI, there is a book (actually, a 2 book series) that is pretty much exactly this writing prompt.

For anyone interested, check out the book Nexus

It is a VERY enjoyable read!

Nexus by Ramez Naam It's a near future sci-fi thriller where the lines between human, trans-human, and post human blur. It also address personal liberties, different countries approaches to this "threat". It's one of the best books I've read in a long time.
