Hose your new backpack down with a can of that, and you should be good to go. Warning: it WILL alter the colors of the material a bit.

Also, be aware that waterproof backpack covers exist, and are a common item among serious backpackers:

Stuff one of those down in a pocket of the bag and ignore it exists until you need it.

I recently transitioned to a Everki backpack, and am pretty happy with it. I haven't had to slog through the kinds of weather with it as are being discussed in this thread though.

I bought a pair of LL Bean Turbo Transits for one of my kids and a family friend who is an Engineering major at UVA. No complaints from either party as yet.
