Don't stop there - it's an excellent primer, but mostly just a first stepping-stone to the nitty gritty. Next up, you should check out Pharmako/Poeia by Dale Pendell. The whole series is amazingly in-depth, and covers most any drug you would need to know. Pendell weaves poetry with history, personal experience with chemistry, anecdote with biology. It's a fantastic journey.
These books really are the best source imo

If you want to read some interesting books on human-plant relationships, including cannabis, check out Pharmako/Poeia and its companion volumes.

Not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for, but they're great books.
Pharmako/Poeia by Dale Pendell and the other two volumes are beautiful, concentrate on psychoactive effects, and are more materialist than occult if you ask me. If you want a book to read, these cannot be beat. If you want a book with recipes that usually work, I am not yet qualified to opine.
This wonderful book gives great insights into the world of the poisonous medicines. And it has a rather extensive section on tobacco! Unfortunately i can't find my copy...
