Something like this is pretty harsh (MDS here) and contains both two types of solvents as well as propane and butane propellants which, from personal experience, will remove varnish very eaily. It is insane that they sell stuff like that and that it has that effect on things it is supppsed to clean and polish, but it does.

It's a good idea to do a little detective work and find out if something was used to mess the finish up. If you don't figure it out, it could happen again and only serve to frustrate you both. It's a good way to ruin your reputation in the process.
