I got one of these and have been really happy with it. Has a "silencer" that works alright but honestly the bell hasnt bothered me at all, hikers appreciate it. The problem with the loud hub alert is you have to stop pedaling, sometimes you dont want to have to do that.

These bear bells are pretty good. Loud enough to be heard buy way less annoying than a cow bell. Also, they have a silencer but it does not always work.

There is something called a magnetic bear bell which warns bears of your presence. I am not sure how effective it is though. Mace is the way to go.
