I play exclusively through these.

Sounds great and I can walk all over the house playing... well as far as my cable will let me.

I got these over a year ago, and have never regretted my decision...

TBH, if he is passionate about sound then dont get designed-for-gaming headsets like the Astros. He doesn't need to be an audiophile or anything, but unless he doesn't really mind about sound quality as long as its good enough, I recommend getting some Sennheisers. They have a bunch of wireless models, and these kinds of brands (Sennheisers, Audio-Technicas, AKG acoustics) are the best.

If voice communication is needed, you can add a 15-20$ clip-on mic that connects to the controller (unlike the headphone wireless base which would connect to the console via optical cable)

EDIT: Something like this

Probably these wireless headphones as the ones I had forever broke, and I can't listen to as much music...which s part of my job...it's a long, complex story...but I am currently trying to save up for them

I'm using the Sennheiser RS 180.

And run the Zalman ZM-MIC1 with the keyboard cable.

Love the quality and no fucking wires touching my legs when I'm in my shorts.

I dropped a wad for the Sennheiser RS 180's - mind blowingly good for gaming on my PS3. Games like BF3 and Uncharted sound unbelievably amazing.

I was hoping to get wireless headphones for the Rift. Has anyone tried the Sennheiser RS 180s? They are open back which seems to be recomended for VR, but I wonder if they are as good quality as the 558s.

For how much you pay for Beats the are awful. The frequency response is basically http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/test/82/8261/beats-studio-2013-frequency-response.jpg Which shows that they will end up distorting also they have a lot of frequencies lowered. The ideal is Flat EQ headphones because then you actually hear it as the Sound Engineer intended.
