I've been very pleased with my Slik Sprint Pro II

I swapped out the head for a nice small Giottos ball head and an arca swiss clamp just because I didn't move the stock Slik head and all of my gear has arca plates.

I mostly use it for day hikes and a little bit of backpacking. The head supports up to 7lbs but if I'm backpacking I'm usually bringing a compact mirrorless camera instead of a DSLR anyway.

The Slik Sprint tripods are pretty much what you want: I've never found another tripod that is more compact than these guys, especially for the price and quality.

These are not necessarily the best prices, just some links. There's a Slik Sprint Pro (19" folded length) and a slightly shorter Slik Sprint Mini (14" folded length). Both of them come with pouches that you can sling across your shoulder:

i have a 30 liter day pack that fits a small tripod, extra layers, camera, snack/water, flashlights & batteries. for a tripod i recommend one that has legs that can splay out almost flat and an invertible central column like this one. they're a little pricier, but can be wedged into places where cheaper tripods cant.

How much weight are you trying to support? That will be the biggest determining factor in picking a stabilization method.

Usually I bring a ~~Slik Sprint Pro II~~ (Edit: woops. wrong model. Slik Sprint Mini II). It's not fancy, but it's not too bulky for the height, and the center column is reversible. The most disappointing part is the ball head, but I shoot exclusively mirrorless nowadays, so it's solid enough.

If I'm really pressed for space, I slap the Slik ball head on a cheap metal tabletop tripod. Obviously placement requires some creativity, but it's solid and extremely compact.
