Perfectly reasonable solutions exist now. Like putting something very similar to bicycle tube sealant between two rubber sheets.

Testing is expensive and inflatables have been a very low priority for NASA until very recently.
Depending on the size of the "nail" Slime might have filled the hole after you removed it, avoiding having to replace the inner tube. I plan on filling my tires (when I get my Rev) with Slime. Here's the Amazon link for Slime:

I was blowing my tube every ride at the beginning of the season. Took it to the local shop and they filled my tube with a sealant, something like this

It's a preventative solution to flats - I've used them for mountain bikes in the past - messy if you ever get a big enough puncture tho, careful!
