As the others said, layers. The three things I'd suggest getting are:
While I rarely bothered in upstate NY, you might also consider silk thermal underwear. You can wear it underneath your clothes for another layer of warmth if needed and it doesn't add much bulk or restrict movement, which is nice.
Other winter advice for upstate New York: get the tread on your tires checked before your first winter there, and check whether your battery needs replacing. And in our car, we always carried an ice scraper, a big bag of kitty litter, a snow shovel, a car charger for the cell phone and the phone number for AAA. (Even if you're not a member, carry the AAA number for your area. If you get stuck, you can call them, sign up for a membership over the phone and immediately ask them to send a truck out to you.)
There're a bunch of other recommendations for stuff to store in your car during winter -- blanket, food, water, those little chemical heaters you can 'break' open, etc. And none of those are a bad idea. But for us the very minimum were things to get us out of the snow if we got stuck, and to call for help if needed.
Finally, if you wear glasses in real life, consider getting a pair of Solar Shield sunglasses (the link is for grey lenses, but they also come in blue, orange, etc). At times, you'll be outside when it's snowing or drifting. The drops will get on your glasses and then you'll find yourself trying to clean your glasses while wearing gloves and winter clothing. Not fun. The solar shield glasses are worn right over your regular glasses, so you can pop them on before you go out and take them off when you get inside. They also do a nice job of blocking sunglare from the sides and overhead.
I hope you enjoy the snow! :)
I broke mine in Florida and my dad loaned me a pair of those fit-over-your-glasses sunglasses that old people in Florida wear. (These: http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Shield-Fits-Over-Sunglasses/dp/B000TJQPVA .)
I liked them so much I bought a pair myself. My eyes just feel so much more relaxed on sunny days when they aren't getting blinded from the side. (I guess old people learn a few things over the years.)
I think what you are referring to are solar shields.
