I usually like to recommend the Canon T3i (~$580 USD) for its wide native lens selection and accessories. It also has 3x lossless digital zoom with Magic Lantern.

The Panasonic G6 (~$640 USD) is also another camera I like to recommend for its 1080p60 for smooth slow motion. It also has wireless control from your smartphone.

The Sony a3000 (~$400 USD) is also an interesting choice. You could buy 2 and still be within your $1000 budget. You can use one for the wide shots and the other for close ups on the same shoot.

That's simply wrong, this is a $300 Sony Alpha with kit, new. Add a used 300mm zoom lens for $120.

Regardless, you're right about getting into the $1k range if you wanted a quality setup (with most of that going toward glass).

So I don't know much about renting gear, but I do know a fair bit about cameras. So if you wanted to not just rent a camera but to own it there is the Sony a3000. It's a great camera that can shoot 1080 60, 30, and 24 so there is some good stuff there, and sony makes great sensors. Here is the link to that https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-18-55mm/dp/B00EH5UGR6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495559130&sr=8-1&keywords=Sony+a3000 . If you don't want to own your camera but instead rent it I would recommend renting either the GH5 which came out recently and it fantastic or the Panasonic Lumix G85 (or G80 if you are in Europe). I would say get the G85 instead of the GH4 because it has a better picture and crazy good stabilization. There is also the GH5 which is a better picture than both the GH4 and the G85, but you really can't go wrong with either. Going on black magic it really depends on what editing software you are using and what computer you are using. The black magic pocket cinema camera is fantastic and you can get great results but you must do color correction and color grading because it shoots in raw. I absolutely love editing raw footage because you can do a crazy amount with it in post and can correct anything you messed up with while shooting. The least powerful machine I have edited raw footage on was a mid range 2014 mac mini with FCPX and I had no problem with it and I got great results. To tell the truth though, for what you need you can mess around a large amount with a 4k image from the G85 or the GH5 in post, you can get almost the same amount of control as a raw file. Also the a3000 is still a great camera and for what you want it will do a great job. Basically you can't go wrong with anything I just suggested.

My luggage is very small, so I’m not sure I could manage a tripod - do you have any recommendations for good lenses?

My camera is a Sony A3000. It has some kickass ISO.

Thanks! I use a simple mirrorless camera base (Sony A3000 https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-18-55mm/dp/B00EH5UGR6), it's in my opinion, more convenient for what I do than a DSLR; for it's portability and quick shot.

I used this lens:

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SEL1855-mount-18-55mm-F3-5-5-6/dp/B01III61KS?th=1

Since it's the only one I had readily available for the game that was under the 76er's rule of <100mm that could take decent shots from my seat.

I have a question about this Sony camera -

Sony α3000 E-mount Camera with APS-C Sensor

First does it come with the 18-55mm lens? I was looking to buy it from amazon and saw these 2 links -- First - $448 and Second - $348. I am confused about the price difference. Both look like they come with lens so why is one expensive than the other?

Is this a good choice for a beginner looking to get into night photography?

I have a Sony a3000 which I purchased at Best Buy because I just had gotten my tax return and the money was burning a hole in my pocket and I wanted to walk out of the store with a DSLR. You can find it cheaper on Amazon:

I got the bundle with the 55-210mm zoom lens:
