Keyboards can be kind of specific to the user I feel where as you might be more likely to know what kind of headphones he prefers.

A good pair of headphones is absolutely amazing for a gamer, especially if they like playing action games where hearing where someone is gives you the edge. A good quality mic is really nice too.

Personally I use this set as it comes with a USB soundcard for if you don't have one in your computer already. Great quality headphones that have lasted me a few years and the USB soundcard is easy to use and nifty. Obviously you'll probably want to do your own research but headphones is a great gift idea if he doesn't have a good set yet.

There are better quality headphones out there but it's a case of whether they have a microphone and what your budget is.

I like Razer as well and 90% of my peripherals are Razer, but I honestly feel audio is the one area you can find something better than Razer.

For good value as well, if you aren't looking to spend a lot i recommend(used to own):

I have seen thes for less than 100$ and they are by far the best value for money of anything I've tried.

These are the ones I use they are really nice but quite a bit more expensive: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PC-360-Headset-Gaming/dp/B003DA4D2U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368684989&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+pc+360

I work at a best buy and have had a chance to try pretty much all the major gaming headsets razer, astro, turtle beach, steelseries, tritton, logitech etc. and i feel these are some pretty good choices

these.

Truly wonderful, the virtual 7.1 works amazingly well, they can be detached from the USB bit and used with anything else, the sound is glorious, and they're pretty god damned cheap as far as headphones go. Amazon warehouse usually has like new ones for around 60 bucks. I did a few days research before buying them and the answer that kept coming up is something like "When professional gamers aren't being paid to have a pair of Razer cans around their necks, they wear these"

Based on the research I have done I would say that there are 3 top contenders:

Plantronics GameCom 780

SteelSeries Siberia V2 Full-Size

HyperX Cloud

There are a lot of people that would be unhappy to see that list without at least honorable mention to the Corsair Vengeance 1500 and the Logitech G430 so there is plenty to choose from

This probably explains it best:

For me, I have my headset hooked up to the usb soundcard running into my keyboard, which is running on USB 3.0. You might be getting some interference from other cables, but someone else should probably answer that.

For the record, this is the headset I bought, although it was $83, not 100. I had been using an 8 year old logitech headset and it was pretty beaten up, so this had everything I wanted within a reasonable budget. I'm quite sure the usb soundcard by itself runs for 40 dollars.

I've been doing some research on the Steelseries Siberia v2 gaming headset, and I'm a little confused about the cord setup.

Currently, I'm running my PS3 through my PC monitor with an HDMI-DVI cable. This wasn't an issue since my previous headset plugged directly into the USB and I had no problem picking up the audio that way.

However, the Siberia connector is USB+3.5mm Stereo. And the PS3 doesn't have a jack for 3.5mm.

So... how exactly would I go about connecting it to my system in order to pick up the audio from my PS3?

Steelseries headsets are pretty good in a pinch. I had the Siberta v2's with the little 7.1 sound card, and they served me really well for 2 years. I found the soundstage was a bit too open for me (the game audio sounded really far away.. if that makes sense), so I've since moved on to some Audio-Technica's and a Yeti microphone.

I couldn't be happier with my new setup, but it's not for everyone. /r/imuya is right by suggesting you get some really good cans that have the 'sound' that you like, then snagging a standalone mic. If you have access to music stores/audiophile stores in your area, they should have a selection of headphones out of the box, so go audition a few sets. You'll be surprised how different each pair behaves, and you can figure out which ones fit the best and sound the best for your ears. Pick the same song/piece of music every time you listen to a new pair.. I use the intro of this Pentatonix song so I can check out vocal clarity, and then when the low notes kick in it gives a sense of the kind of bass power I can expect.

Good luck!

Actually sorry, I was incorrect, those are not the ones with surround sound. These are

Hey bud.. These are kind of pricey, but this is the highest rated I've seen for in-line separate volume/mic control:
http://www.astrogaming.com/a30-audio-system/A30-AUDIO-SYSTEM-ASTRO.html

And here's one that looks like it has a mic mute (so you'll have to set the mic volume software) but the pre-amp is in-line:

Let me know what you think!
