I'm pretty sure this is still a thing in Russia, actually, and maybe other places. Here's 'Sleeping Beauty On Ice' dvd on amazon, for instance. Pretty sure this youtube video is the entire production of Carmen On Ice. Here's the Nutcracker. I'm sure there are more recordings of other shows somewhere. My guess is we don't see this any more stateside because it's likely insanely expensive to produce; so it was profitable in the highest hay days of figure skating, but more risky now. So we get Disney on Ice, because Disney has the money to still put on ice shows even with the risk, and because it's an established name that has been operating for years and years.
