Paint it, then reinstall the plate with 3" screws.

If you want to you can get a new plate like this https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000LNMTRS/ or https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K38HW/ so that the screws are not in the same spot as the old screws.
