I have a few different casual boots that I wear throughout the winter (and the fall and the spring because it's almost always cold where I live). Current line up:

Timberland tall waterproof boots
Waterproof leather Uggs (sooo warm!)
Teva de la Vina. My most comfy boots, along the the Uggs.
Bean boots for the muddiest, slushiest conditions.

I've got two pairs of ankle boots I wear for traveling, an old Merrell Shiloh Cuff and the Teva De La Vina ankle. (Though TBH the "low" Tevas might be better if you have narrow ankles like I do because with the ankle ones I worry the rain will get in between the boot and my skinny jeans.) Unless you've got a well-loved pair of broken-in sturdy boots, I'd go for a comfort one like those, because they're good for all that walking immediately and you can often find them for $50-60 on Amazon.
