The Demonologist The Extraordinary Career of Ed and Lorraine Warren
The Catholic view of possession is very legal-y hilariously enough, but most T.V. writers don't look too far into it to explain deeper. If you like reading this stuff I can recommend a couple books.
The Demonologist- This is about Ed and Lorraine Warren from 1980 or so
The Dark Sacrament - Has two viewpoints, both Catholic and Protestant
An Exorcist explains the Demonic -Written by Father Gabriel Amorth , exorcist of Rome before he passed away. And where The Rite tried to draw inspiration (and failed) from.

Look at the cover. He is using the conjuring to advertise his book. It's also listed as non fiction.
The doll is real. I read the Warren's book about 20 years ago and clearly remember them discussing the case.
