They have replaced Self-Mastery with Self-Delusion, sad really.

if you want a book about Buddhism that's both accessible to Western audiences and yet evades the whitewashing that you get with modern buddhist books, i can recommend The Doctrine of Awakening.

The guy who wrote it was a far-right mystic, but because of that, he doesn't really bother with making Buddhism more hip and attractive that it really is. He delves quite deep into metaphysics towards the end, but that's where Buddhism itself gets quite esoteric anyway. It also addresses the seeming contradictions of Buddhism regarding rebirth and ethics.

Life is terrible, there is no escape, not even through suicide. All you can do is embrace it.
